Case Study Genre - Crime

Introduction -

In this blog I am going to be taking about Film Genre and the genre Crime/Gangters to see how it has developed through the years and what aspects have changed and remanded the same.
I am going to talking about how genre has played a major part in film and the changes from old crime films to modern ones and also how the womans role has become more dynamic and elements that a male would normally only play, women now are doing it too.

Genre is a originated from a french word "genre".
"3. genus; kind; sort; style."
(Dictionarty.com)

Genre is used to divide different media lke music and books. It is also used in film to target audiences, this helps the producer to know what things can be added or shown according to its genre.
Before the 1980's study of crime was still only in two sections,

"detective' and 'mystery".
(Martin Priestman, p.1)

Crime ficiton took off in the years between the world wars, and produced a major number of writers who became popular.

" 'Golden Age' of dective ficition, was Agatha Christie."
(Barry Forshaw, p.15)

Agatha Christie took crime to a next level by taking the characteristics of Conan Doyle's Sherlcok Holmes. We can see how in crime the scene has gotten more complex with riddles and hiden means like in Sherlock Holmes. Crime is not just 'they kill my friend, i kill there friend' its more to do with crimes or murders that have takes place to be almost perfect but with edvidance and clues the crime is unfold.

Now, in modern films, genre is normally blended to create "hybrids" or "subgenres" making films not pure genres.

"4. A hybrid genre is higher in uncertainty and information content than a pure genre."
(Thomas Kent, p.67)

Since hybrid consist of mixtures of genre and sub-genres, it can get very enlardged with more and more elements beeing added as more sub-genres are put in place.

In "The Godfarther" we can see how the guy takes matter onto is own hands and says a mafia lead to bring his justice. Also we can see how the movie revolves around the male characters, the way they hand buisness, family issues and enimies is in a way showing how a father figure from that region should be like and suggesting a womans place is in the house with her children and in a safe place, not fighting crime.

In the movie "The Tuxedo" we see Jackie Chan with Jennifer Love Hewitt fighting crime and taking-out there enimies. Normally back in the olden days a womans place was to be scared or not in the main chain of events including the action. We can see how in the "The Tuxedo" Del Blaine (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt) is giving a medium aggressive action side to her character and with her sexy looks adds that extra depth to show that you can look great beating up the bad-guys no matter the phyisical size, this puts women in a more equal size unlike in "The Godfather".

Through research and analysing I have found that since mixing genres creates a new level, depth and more vaiarity, it is more commonly viewed and favoured than films more near to its pure genre. With technology expanding, ideas growing and the number of hybrids of films out to-date, there seems to be no sign of it slowing down.
